What is Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Training?
Heart rate variability (HRV) describes the way that the heart usually beats: the time between each heart beat varies slightly, and is rarely ever steady for more than a few beats. While this variation is natural, the length of time between beats can impact an individual’s emotional state. Through HRV training, people can use biofeedback techniques to manipulate their HRV to improve their overall mood and well-being.
How Does it Work?
To understand the way that HRV training works, it is important to first know a little bit about the ways that the heart and the brain are interconnected. Heart rate is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, or the branch of the nervous system that monitors body functions necessary for survival. Within the autonomic nervous system there are two sub-branches: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system stimulates a “fight or flight” response and increases heart rate to prepare the body for activity; the parasympathetic nervous system calms the body down and slows heart rate to prepare the body for rest and recovery.
As we breathe in, the sympathetic nervous system is stimulated; as we breathe out, the parasympathetic. These two components of the autonomic nervous system are responsible for HRV. This push-pull relationship can cause people to feel unnecessary anxiety or discomfort simply because of the way they are breathing. Emotions often first start with a bodily response, such as an increase in heart rate or the sweating of the palms. By taking control of HRV using biofeedback techniques, people can better monitor and manage these bodily emotional responses, promoting and improving their overall well-being and ability to cope with strong emotions.
What are the Benefits of HRV Training?
HRV training is often enormously beneficial to the people that choose to undergo it. Through HRV training, individuals can learn biofeedback techniques that:
- Improve mood
- Decrease anxiety
- Lessen the chances of experiencing depression
- Improve sleep quality
- Improve coping skills
