What is a Low Energy Neurofeedback System (LENS)?
Developed in the early 1990’s by Dr. Lens Ochs, a Northern California psychologist, this treatment was created as an alternative to other medications for brain-based dysfunction. The low energy neurofeedback system (LENS) consists of a computer-based software connected to an EEG box, or a device used to measure brain waves. This treatment stimulates biochemical changes through the use of faint radiofrequency energy signals to help the brain regulate itself.
How Does it Work?
During a LENS treatment, sensors are attached to the scalp to detect brain activity using an EEG machine. The EEG machine feeds the results it measures into a computer, which interprets them and feeds them back through the sensor wires attached to the skin. Too much or too little activity measured in this way is indicative of a number of mental problems: excessive activity is often the result of difficulties with mood, energy, focus, and mental clarity, while too little activity is caused by trauma and stress that can inhibit cognitive functioning.
Using the information measured from the EEG, faint radiofrequency signals are focused at the brain in order to optimize functioning there. Patients weary of exposing their brains to radiofrequency energy can take comfort knowing the radiofrequency energy used during a LENS treatment is 4,000 times weaker than what their brains are exposed to when they talk on a cell phone. Each of these treatments typically lasts only a few minutes, and patients feel absolutely no pain during or after the procedure.
Can I Benefit from a LENS Treatment?
While we typically utilize LENS treatments for patients who have recently experienced some head trauma or traumatic brain injury, this procedure can be used to help patients address a broad range of psychological problems. These include:
- Addiction/Dependency Disorders
In addition to addressing specific concerns, LENS can benefit almost anyone interested in optimizing their cognitive functioning.
