What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a branch of healthcare that emphasizes prevention rather than treatment, with the goal of optimizing a patient’s overall health and wellness in a comprehensive, natural way. While other branches of healthcare may be said to focus on treating illnesses, naturopathic medicine seeks to identify their underlying causes. Professionals in this branch of medicine use therapeutic techniques that encourage the individual’s natural capacity for self-healing and have minimal side effects and risk.
What is a Naturopathic Doctor?
A naturopathic doctor is a doctor that has completed a naturopathic program of study at one of the currently accredited seven schools of naturopathic medicine in North America.
The first two years of a naturopathic education are very similar to that of traditional medical schools; future doctors learn about anatomy, physiology, pathology, biochemistry, microbiology, and pharmacology. This information is presented in conjunction with introductory naturopathic medicine techniques, including naturopathic manipulation, botanical medicine, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, and nutrition.
The last two years of a naturopathic education consist of more specialized courses and clinical rotations. Once this education is complete, ND’s must pass Part I and Part II of the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Exams (NPLEX) in order to receive an official license.
How can a Naturopathic Doctor Benefit Me?
Unfortunately, the state of Tennessee does not currently regulate or license naturopathic doctors. Because of this, our practice’s ND’s cannot legally diagnose or treat the diseases of our patients. We recommend that any patients seeking the care of an ND also maintain a primary care physician.
However, our ND’s are highly skilled and knowledgeable. They can provide invaluable counseling services, as well as health and wellness guidance to patients. This guidance and care can both lessen a patient’s chances of contracting diseases and improve the symptoms of any diseases and health problems that they do develop.
