Benefits of Collagen PIN™ Micro Needling

Collagen PIN™ micro needling is a minimally invasive technique intended to induce skin rejuvenation. Micro needling was first invented to help treat scars and is now being used to resurface aging skin.

How it Works

The Collagen PIN™ is a handheld tool that is applied directly to the skin. The tool uses several tiny needles in the tip to make thousands of microscopic punctures in the skin. These minor injuries induce the skin to heal itself, producing more collagen, elastin, and blood vessels. Aging skin is characterized by a reduction in the amount of collagen and elastin that it produces, resulting in loose skin that has an uneven texture and is not as soft and smooth.

Stimulating these processes with micro needling can restore a more youthful structure to the skin, improving its appearance and texture. Collagen PIN™ micro needling can also improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and help reduce the appearance of acne scars.

Advantages

One major advantage that micro needling has over other rejuvenation techniques is the ability to be applied to areas that are difficult to treat with peels or lasers, such as near the eyes and mouth, or hands. Individuals interested in avoiding the chemicals used in peels may find that micro needling is a safe, effective alternative. Individuals with darker skin hues are at higher risk of experiencing burns and scarring from laser treatments, and may benefit from using micro needling as an alternative resurfacing procedure. The downtime from micro needling is minimal to zero, so patients interested in avoiding the peeling and redness commonly associated with other resurfacing techniques may prefer micro needling.

What to Expect

Treated areas will have a local anesthetic applied to reduce discomfort. The skin will then be covered with a serum. The Collagen PIN™ device has 12 micro needles that rapidly and repeatedly penetrate the skin as the device is slowly moved across the surface. The depth of the needle penetration is customizable for each patient’s needs. Treatment takes very little time, even for a large area. There may be some redness after treatment, which usually subsides by the next day. There is no downtime or recovery period. Patients can immediately return to regular activities. It can take one to two weeks for the effects of the treatment to become apparent as it takes time for the skin to produce more collagen and elastin.

How Many Treatments

Patients may need multiple treatments to get the desired effect. Treatments are usually administered every four to six weeks. For general rejuvenation, three or four treatments is usually sufficient. To treat stretch marks and acne scars, up to six treatments may be necessary. Yearly maintenance treatments are sometimes suggested.

Safety

In trained hands, micro needling is very safe. The needles are designed for single-use, and the device itself is cleaned thoroughly between patients so there is no risk of disease transmission. The needles are sterile, but because openings are being made in the skin, there is a slight, but rare, risk of superficial infection.
